Faith of our Fathers: The Theologies of the American Presidency
President James Buchanan
The Fifteenth President of the United States of America
Served from 1857-1861
Lived 1791-1868
Party: Democratic
Denomination: Presbyterian
President James Buchanan often ranks as one of the worst presidents to have ever graced the office. This is in large part by his “Doe-Boy” appeasement of the Southern States’ enslavement of Africans in chattel slavery. His unwillingness to employ the federal government led to the dissolution of the Union and the start of the American Civil War in April 1861. Until President Trump took office in 2016, the fifteenth President was considered almost universally as the worst president. He also remains the only president to remain a bachelor throughout his term in office.
President Buchanan was not a member of any Christian denomination while in office. However toward the end of his term things began to change. Upon conversation and discussion with a Presbyterian Pastor in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, President Buchanan had the following to say:
"Well, sir, I thank you. My mind is now made up. I hope I am a Christian. I think I have had some of the experience which you describe, and as soon as I retire from my office as President, I will unite with the Presbyterian Church.
