William Jefferson Clinton was elected to the presidency at a period of great innovation in the country. His policies were met with either great excitement or great upheaval. That said by the end of his administration he had eliminated the federal deficit and presided over a period of economic expansion the likes of which the country had not seen in a generation. President Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives in 1998 for “high crimes and misdemeanors”, making him the second president to face impeachment—Andrew Johnson being the first. A trial was held in the Senate under the jurisdiction of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, and he was acquitted of all charges by a vote of 55-45 not guilty.
President Clinton was raised Southern Baptist however during his tenure in Washington he attended Foundry United Methodist Church in the District with his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton. Hillary Clinton would later become a United States Senator, presidential candidate, and Secretary of State. They still maintain their ties to Foundry Church and attended a recent anniversary celebration with their daughter, Chelsea.
Note: Chelsea Clinton, former First Daughter, wrote the foreword to the Rev. Robert W. Lee’s book The Pulpit and the Paper.
