President Gerald R. Ford is the only American President to not be elected by the American people to either the Vice-Presidency, or Presidency of the United States. He was nominated to the Vice-Presidency after Vice-President Spiro Agnew resigned. This was the first time the 25th amendment was invoked. The United States Senate confirmed Vice-President Ford’s appointment 92 to 3, the United States House of Representatives agreed with a vote of 387 to 35 in 1973. In August of 1974, President Richard Nixon resigned his office, thus making Gerald R. Ford the nation’s 38th President.

President Ford was a lifelong and stalwart Episcopalian. Ford died on December 26th, 2006 at age 93, and a service was held at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Palm Desert, California on December 29th. On January 2nd a state funeral service was held at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, also known as Washington National Cathedral. On January 3rd, 2007 a service was held at Grace Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was finally laid to rest on January 3rd, 2007.
