Faith of our Fathers: The Theologies of the American Presidency
President James Madison
The Fourth President of the United States of America
Served from 1809-1817
Lived 1751-1836
Party: Democratic-Republican
Denomination: Episcopalian
President Madison was the first Commander-in-Chief to visit an active battlefield on behalf of the United States during the War of 1812. James Madison was only 5 foot, 4 inches which meant he was unimposing during his visit to some. His short stature gives him the superlative for being the shortest president in United States history.
James Madison was baptized and raised in the Anglican tradition, and much like his predecessor Jefferson, Madison subscribed more to Deist beliefs than that of Christianity. Even still, during his work as a delegate in the Virginia Convention he fought ardently, strongly, and robustly for not only religious tolerance but for religious freedom outright.
