Faith of our Fathers: The Theologies of the American Presidency
President James Monroe
The Fifth President of the United States of America
Served from 1817-1825
Lived 1758-1831

President James Monroe was a president deeply committed to foreign affairs. The Monroe Doctrine, named after James Monroe, established a foreign policy that would be adhered to for over a century. It established US dominance over affairs in the Western Hemisphere. This act moved the United States from irrelevance to a global power.
President Monroe was raised an Anglican in the former Church of England, and is the wild card of our conversation surrounding theology and the American Presidency. President Monroe burned his correspondence with his wife, and no remaining documents remain discussing any personal piety or faith.
