Faith of our Fathers: The Theologies of the American Presidency
President John Quincy Adams
The Sixth President of the United States of America
Served from 1825-1829
Lived 1767-1848
Party: Democratic-Republican
Denomination: Unitarian/Congregationalist
John Quincy Adams is the first son of a former United States President to serve as United States president. He served one term, and after being defeated by Andrew Jackson he chose not to attend his successor’s inauguration. He would, however, return to the United States House of Representatives and serve until 1848 where he was a strong proponent of abolition and the rights of indigenous people.
The 6th President of the United States was, like his President-father, was Unitarian with a Congregationalist-bend. He helped to establish the First Unitarian Church of Washington D.C.--Even still, he would later somewhat confess his belief in a Trinitarian God, unlike that of the Unitarian faith. President John Quincy Adams chose to be sworn in on the copy of the United States Constitution instead of the Holy Bible.
