Faith of our Fathers: The Theologies of the American Presidency
President Andrew Johnson
The Seventeenth President of the United States of America
Served from 1865-1869
Lived 1808-1875
Party: Democrat
Denomination: Non-Specified/No Affiliation
Though President Andrew Johnson would come to be known as an opponent of Reconstruction, prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War he was the only United States Senator from a southern state to remain loyal to the United States. Despite his initial loyalty, his response to the plan for Reconstruction led to his impeachment, making him the first President of the United States to be impeached. Only two other presidents since President Johnson have been impeached (Presidents Clinton and Trump*).
Just as President Johnson was apathetic toward Reconstruction, it appears he was equally apathetic toward religion and the proliferation of denominationalism during his lifetime. He seemed interested in the Methodist tradition until their leaders took a stance during his impeachment trial. He also took a liking to Roman Catholicism as he appreciated that pews were not sold like in Anglicanism, but rather seating was open.
*President Trump was impeached twice during his tenure from 2017-2021.
